Good roleplaying games4/19/2023 ![]() It has been a jam-packed 12 months for Pokémon fans, as these will be the third main-series game in the space of a year. ![]() Generation 9 of Pokémon is finally upon us with Scarlet & Violet. Disney Infinity developer Avalanche Software is at the helm, so we can only infer there’ll be teenagers with grappling hooks and wingsuits all over the hallowed halls of its magical boarding school. Rowling isn’t directly involved in this new title, so the Potter canon remains unchanged by its events, but it’s still an irresistible opportunity to pack up one’s suitcase and journey off to wizarding school. Oh nothing, just a massive open-world RPG set in Hogwarts in the late 1800s. We’ve got everything crossed that this one continues the genre’s hot streak. Isometric games are having a renaissance as of late thanks to Disco Elysium, Pillars of Eternity II and the like. In its intro alone, you’re confronted with a woman crying over the corpse of her husband and given some pretty dark choices on how to react to it – particularly when it transpires their son was the gunman who caused the scene. His Australian drawl conveys as much of the atmosphere as the dusty post-end times landscapes he’s talking over: like the original isometric Fallouts it draws from, this is a tough world to live in. There’s a narrator in Broken Roads’ reveal trailer whose voice sounds like a muscle car idling. Playable through entirely in co-op or solo, Gotham Knights sees a reprise of that perfectly paced combat that Rocksteady made famous in Arkham games, but under WB Games Montreal’s stewardship there’s a new focus on using each character’s special abilities to efficiently dispatch the ne’er-do-wells of the city. Not that it’s ever a breeze living in this place, but the Court of Owls crime network has really amped up its activities lately. Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood have the run of Gotham City in Batman’s absence, and they inherit it at a time of turmoil for the metropolis. Plenty of questions remain: How did the Mechonis sword pierce the Uraya Titan? Are Pyra & Mythra still alive? Will Xenoblade Chronicles X get even a shred of recognition? Whatever the answers, it’s sure to be a tale for the ages. Combat has undergone a huge change, as characters can now change classes on the fly, and pairings of the six protagonists can fuse into an Ouroboros, which we know very little about right now. Gameplay reveals have shown off that the party can now have seven active members at once, a huge step up from the restriction of three in previous games. Fans are full of anticipation about what characters are returning, fan favourites like Melia and Nia have been heavily teased, but it’s still unclear what role they’ll play in the story. Surprisingly moved forward from its announced September release date, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 promises to bring together the worlds from the previous two games in a new grand narrative. Exactly where this alternate story will lead remains to be seen, but hopefully, Three Hopes can do for Fire Emblem Warriors what Three Houses did for the main branch of the series. The hack-and-slash gameplay is a big draw, as the Warriors branch of the series abandons the typical turn-based strategy elements. This new entry gives a new protagonist, Shez, who joins one of the titular three houses to take on the Ashen Demon, which the trailers have implied is Byleth, the protagonist of Three Houses. Everyone’s favourite characters are returning with brand new looks for fan artists to fawn over, from a slightly less edgy (but still very edgy) Dimitri to a long-haired version of grown-up Mercedes. It’s no surprise then that the next major release for the series is continuing in the Three Houses canon. Failing that, at the very least there should be the occasional cuirass or a chest that somebody has inexplicably left one gold coin in.įire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (Switch, Jun 24)įire Emblem: Three Houses is by far the most successful Fire Emblem game so far, with over 3.4 million sales as of the end of 2021. ![]() A great modern RPG should take you on a journey and steep it in interconnected systems. Games that embark on vast narratives and give you some agency in them, whether that means your protagonist has a new pair of +5 charisma shoulder pads for the next big fight or their dialogue options actually change the course of events in the game world. When it boils down to it, role-playing in 2022 is about depth of experience. What even is an RPG in 2022? Such has been the cross-pollination of genre elements over the last few generations that where you’d once have described a game with XP, an inventory and upgrade trees as classic RPG material, now those markers only narrow it down to ‘a video game’.
